ASBK Round 5 Morgan Park

What a thrilling weekend spread over 3 days there was action aplenty.

YMI Superbike Race 1

Victory to Wayne Maxwell after blasting through the pack. Troy Herfoss binned his Crankt Protein Honda with 10 laps to go, leaving the championship wide open. Corey Turner put in a stellar performance on the Desmosport Ducati securing second place for his debut ride on the Ducati. Pole sitter Cru Halliday took out the last podium spot.

Halliday got away with a good start but Josh Waters on the Team Suzuki ECSTAR GSXR-1000R was too quick to turn 1 with Herfoss and Bryan Staring on the other Crankt Protein Honda close behind. Early on there was a huge gap from third back to fourth until Herfoss lost the front and binned it at YMI corner and damaged the bike to badly to continue.

When Herfoss crashed Maxwell was on a charge. Maxwell qualified seventh but was the only rider consistently in the 1: 13’s throughout the race. Maxwell fought his way to second and was breathing Hallidays exhaust. Halliday ran wide at YMF corner and Maxwell capitalised and took the lead, Turner found his way past Halliday soon after.

From here on Maxwell maintained the lead until the race conclusion for a memorable victory.

Staring retired after he started smoking from the belly pan, disappointing as he was in the top 5 for the duration.

The podium for a sensational crowd pleaser was Maxwell, Turner and Halliday.

YMI Superbikes Race 2

Halliday Leads the pack

Cru Halliday wrapped up a stellar weekend Sunday at Morgan park with his first YMI Superbike win of 2017, while Wayne Maxwell and Troy Herfoss also had podium results.

Halliday started first off the grid and ultimately beat Maxwell over the line by a second, with Herfoss just over one and a half seconds behind.

Halliday took the lead into turn one followed by Staring, Waters and Herfoss. Lap two featured a high attrition, Falzon Beau Beaton and Matt Walters all went down leaving Halliday, Herfoss and Waters a sizeable buffer out front.

Herfoss and Maxwell do battle

By Lap 4 Maxwell was looking to repeat his Race One result as he caught up to the lead runners. Herfoss managed to find his way past and take the lead with 10 laps remaining, behind Turner and Robbie Bugden were duking it out for fifth. Bugden attempted to overtake Turner but crashed out in trying.

Soon thereafter Turner caught up to the leading four and the entire top five were separated by less than a second. Turner’s speed wasn’t to last as he crashed out. What a spectacular debut for the young Ducati rider.

Halliday eventually took the lead from Herfoss leaving him to battle it out for second. Maxwell got it over Herfoss on the second to last lap, but by that time Halliday had such a big lead he was unstoppable.

Halliday took the win with Maxwell second and Herfoss third.
