11 years ago the rally community mourned the passing of one of the most charismatic and possibly most successful rally drivers the southern hemisphere has ever produced. Despite being a New Zealander he was welcomed into the Australian rally community, where he set about turning the national championship upside down. Peter already had many years of successful driving behind him having competed on the world stage for 7 consecutive years, and in the New Zealand Championship. In 1992 he entered the Australian Rally Championship, this is where as a lad of 18 I first encountered “Possum” driving the now famed yellow with blue splash livery, in a Subaru RS Liberty along with fellow team driver Robb Herridge, Peter took out the Class N title this year. 1993 – 95 saw him crowned Asia Pacific Champion and in 96 he stormed back in Oz and claimed 7 consecutive ARC crowns blitzing the previous record of 5 wins. Peter was unstoppable even when all the odds were stacked against him his incredible talent and passion would win through. Possum was what drew me to this sport that I love so much and for that I am thankful.
Peter “Possum “Bourne he may be gone from our lives but not from our hearts and his legacy will live on.
