2015 Queensland Rally Championship – Round 1
Ian Menzies (Nav. Robert McGowan) will no doubt be rubbing his hands at the prospects of taking the event out, having spent every round of the 2014 QRC in an extremely close and hard fought battle with eventual winner Matt Van Tuinen (Nav. Erin Kelly). Matt appears to have been shot by ‘cupid’s arrow’ and for the time being at least will not be there to fend off Ian’s title hopes.
In a surprise turn, Matt’s potent Subaru will be piloted by Marius Swart (Nav. Peta Davies), who may yet be able to ruin Ian Menzies party. If not, he will not be able to show his face at the bar after the event – unless he is buying of course.
Kent Lawrence (Nav. James Wilson), and Wayne Menzies (Nav. Chris Baxter) both in similar Mitsubishi Evos to Ian Menzies, will also be chasing outright glory.
One young lad who has shown some real pace is Phillip Casper (Nav. Christopher Hamilton) in his 1975 Ford Escort, in the classic class. Phil has shown that what he lacks in modern machinery he can make up in driving ability, and has been as high as 3rd outright in previous QRC events. Hugh Scott (Nav. Neil Wooley) will be one of several Datsun 1600s, keeping the Escort crew honest. Mark Byrne (Nav. Lauren Hammet) also makes the big trip from Rockhampton to show off his tidy Nissan Bluebird.
There are plenty more 4wd cars including Kim Ackworth (Nav Ian Swinbourne), in her gorgeous Colin McCrae replica Subaru Liberty, and plenty more amazing sideways spectator pleasing cars such as Jamie Macfarlane (Nav. Kevin Harding) in the freshly turned out HDT liveried V8 Commodore.
If you’ve ever thought of having a go at rallying, you should join your local rally club and get to know some drivers like young Mikayla Macdonald who will be having her first go at navigating for Ross Cox in his trusty Mitsubishi VR4. Why not ask her how it went over a beer after the event? Whether you want to get into rallying, would like to spectate at the event, or are willing to help with a road closure (your own personal spectator point) we’d love to see you in the forest this Saturday.
