The MPS Web Consulting Services Border Ranges Short Course Rally run by the Gold Coast Tweed Motorsporting Clubs Inc. on Saturday the 31st October in Woodenbong NSW was won by Allan Griffin and Brad Smith after nine years of entering the event.
Driving his Stanza, Allan was fully committed from the get go over the loose, fast, but beautiful shire roads of the region. Chasing hard and recording identical times through the last stage were Tony Scott and co-driver Mikayla MacDonald in their Corolla DX.
Shredding tyres in their Falcon XR8 trying to match the pair ahead with only seconds separating the top three over most of the eight stages were Ian Menzies and Robert McGowan.
Matt Linning and Craig Morrison won the battle of a very impressive field of Classics driving their Escort MK2 ahead of Daniel and John Gibson in the Lancer from Tom Dermody and Brian O’Neil in the RS1800. Wayne Hoy and Andrew Bennett were in a ‘spin’ after deciding to run the ‘Z’ instead of the 1600.
The quality of the roads and the flowing nature of the event was evident by the top seven cars home being all two wheel drive. First AWD home was the Todd Webster / Alex Nolan WRX Impreza.
The only accident of the event was when young guns Morgan Douglas and Holy Kilbride ran wide in their Excel Hatch wide and hit a big strainer fence post ripping it from the ground. Undeterred and with lots of race tape holding the car together they finished the event still setting good times for their first outing.
A highlight of the weekend was the hospitality and the home cooked meals provided by the locals at the very pretty Woodenbong Showgrounds Service Park.
